Community Quilt Project for the Homeless

In 2002 Brenda Powers enlisted the help of Barb Michaels and Louise Clawson to help make and distribute jean rag quilts for the homeless in our community. Since that start, ladies from many area churches, some of the ladies come from Wayland, Shelbyville, and Kalamazoo, have been meeting each week to cut and sew these quilts. The quilts are comprised of squares made with a layer of jean material, batting and flannel. They are assembled in a rag quilt with the corner square embroidered with the words “In God’s Love”. As of last year, 2776 adult size and 15 kid size quilts have been given away. October 8, 2023 is this year’s Picnic in the Park where a sloppy joe lunch will be served to our guests and the quilts are handed out. We have 110 adult quilts and 9 kid size quilts ready to give away.

Anyone who would like to help with this valuable mission project are welcome to join us at the First Congregational Church in Otsego from 1-2:30 to mark, cut and sew next year’s quilts!!
